The ISPE D/A/CH Affiliate Chapter, which covers Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, is the world’s largest of the more than 40 ISPE affiliates and chapters. The award presented at the ISPE Facilities of the Future Conference 2026 underscores both the region’s importance to the pharmaceutical industry and the strength of our network.
In addition, our affiliate makes targeted investments in supporting the next generation of professionals in the industry. Programs such as Emerging Leaders, Women in Pharma®, and mentoring initiatives support talented individuals from their college years all the way to leadership positions, ensuring a long-term supply of expertise and leadership in the life sciences industry.
Members benefit in particular from three aspects: access to experienced experts, ongoing dialogue with regulatory authorities and industry representatives, and a wide range of specialized and networking groups. A multi-year term for the Executive Board also ensures strategic continuity and sustainable growth.
One of its greatest achievements is its role in the development of Pharma 4.0™, which has set international standards for digitalization and modern production processes. Other notable contributions include the Containment Guide, the guide to membrane-based WFI production, and the Robotics of the Year Awards (RAYA). The Emerging Leaders initiatives, including the international hackathon and the Future Leaders Days, have also had an impact far beyond the D/A/CH region.
Looking ahead, the affiliate aims to remain a technological leader and stay closely attuned to the needs of the pharmaceutical industry. The focus is on expanding collaboration between industry and government agencies, fostering the next generation of professionals and leaders, and translating key future-oriented topics—such as digitalization, sustainability, advanced manufacturing, and operational excellence—into practical solutions. As a result, the ISPE D/A/CH Affiliate increasingly sees itself as a key player in shaping a strong innovation ecosystem for the pharmaceutical industry.
Our region is one of the world’s leading hubs for the pharmaceutical, life sciences, and engineering industries. Although collaboration across three countries is organizationally challenging, it creates a particularly diverse network characterized by intensive professional exchange and a high level of innovation. The international structure also makes it possible to support Europe-wide initiatives, such as the Annex 1 Symposium in Lyon. High member retention is achieved through practical content, regular events, and dedicated working groups that hold workshops at least once a year.
A key factor in our success is the combination of many years of technical expertise and a commitment to innovation. Established Communities of Practice such as GAMP®, Containment, Project Management, Critical Utilities, and Aseptic Processing form the foundation for knowledge sharing. At the same time, new expert groups on sustainability and operational excellence were established to address current industry issues. Many working groups actively contribute to the development of ISPE guidelines and industry standards, including publications on Pharma 4.0™, containment, and membrane-based water-for-injection production.
